Additional Information/Pictures

The Breg Dorsal Night Splint What is a Heel Spur?

A common cause of heel pain is the heel spur, a bony growth on the underside of the heel bone. The spur is usually visible on x-ray, and appears as a protrusion that can extend forward as much as half an inch.

When there is no indication of bone enlargement, the condition is sometimes referred to as "heel spur syndrome." The most frequent cause of heel spur syndrome is an abnormal motion of the foot called excessive pronation. Normally, while walking or during long distance running, your foot will strike the ground on the heel, then roll forward toward your toes and inward to the arch.

Your arch should only dip slightly during this motion. If it lowers too much, you have what is known as excessive pronation.
