What is the difference between Patella Instability & Patellar Tracking?

Patellar tracking disorder occurs when the kneecap (patella) shifts out of place (tracks) as the leg bends or straightens. Left untreated, the knee will continue to experience pain and progressive dysfunction with such long-term effects as osteoarthritis.

Patella instability occurs when the kneecap (patella) is unstable or "wobbly" due to quad weakness or general ligament laxity. Most patella stabilizer braces will have a "U" shaped buttress or oval, where the patella tracking brace will have a lateral or outer J type of buttress.
