The DonJoy S.E.R.F. Strap Information

The NEW DonJoy S.E.R.F. Strap is the revolutionary change in the way doctors' deal with patellofemoral pain. Traditional treatment of patellofemoral pain (PFP) has been based on the premise that abnomral patellar tracking and/or malalignment is the primary cause of symptoms. While this theory may hold true in some instances, it is not always the case. In fact, the true cause of PFP remains somewhat controversial...until now.

Rreasarch conducted by Dr. Christopher Powers at the University of Southern California has suggested that abnormal patellar tracking may be the result of excessive internal rotation of the femur (i.e. the femur moving under the patella). Donjoy and Dr. Powers have worked together to create a brace that treats the patient's condition at the source...the hip. The S.E.R.F. Strap stabilizes the patello femoral joint and reduces pain through external rotation of the femur.

  • The first patellofemoral brace designed to treat PFP stemming from abnormal hip motion (s).
  • If your doctor suspects your PFP is related to poor proximal control, the S.E.R.F. Strap is the right choice..
  • The S.E.R.F. Strap can be used to control abnormal hip motion during leisure/sport activities.
  • Unique 3-point hip-leg anchor reduces patellofemoral pain by externally rotating the hip.
  • Thin Breath-O-Prene material is lightweight, breathable, and is designed to be worn underneath clothing.
  • Contoured design limits migration during activity.
  • re-Application markers for easy re-application and improved patient compliance.
  • 3 sizes fitted using a height-weight index.
  • 6 months warranty

Patient Assessment

The step down test is the easiest way to assess whether a patient may benefit from the S.E.R.F. Strap. While lowering with the affected leg, monitor the patient for signs of excessive hip internal rotation, adduction, and/or knee valgus.

"works, but not comfortable. This brace can be tricky to put on. I can never get it tight enough on the first try. If it's too loose, it will fall off durring your run. This brace was provided to me by my Physical Thereapist. Once again, this helps my knee pain, but diffucult to wear. I am still working on strengthening my hips and quads. This does help your body re-learn."

"this has been the first breace to actually help me. my left knee is set on aan angle and so my patell does not track properly i also lack cushion between the joints. this strap allows a slight lift and turn out to set my patella straight. it's grat for walking but, not for activities that require bending or climing due to the fact that it may move or slide out of position. out of position."
